The Amaryllis as a symbol
The amaryllis is a bulbous and daffodil-like ornamental plant that you may be familiar with as a gift during Christmas time. The name Amaryllis comes from Greek mythology and is derived from the Ancient Greek word amarysso, which means something like “shine” or "radiant”. Not surprisingly, the Amaryllis is widely adopted as a symbol. Just take a look in books or on the internet. The most frequently mentioned meanings you will come across relate to pride and beauty, but the amaryllis also stands for strength and courage, for example. Even its colours symbolize different concepts. For example, a red amaryllis is associated with love, passion and happiness; the white amaryllis with purity, hope and renewal; the orange amaryllis with positivity and optimism and the pink amaryllis with friendship and togetherness.
An amaryllis is often given as a gift to encourage people, to show appreciation, to mark new beginnings or opportunities, and to celebrate achievements or milestones. The amaryllis also symbolizes self-assurence, inspiration, perseverance, personal development, success, renewed energy, and embracing challenges. What begins as a small bulb, with just a little care and attention, grows into a long stem from which an impressive and imposing flower unfolds again and again.
